Frankincense oil is a very old, well-researched oil that contains many advantageous properties. Find out about Frankincense oil benefits and how it can help your fur baby.

As a pet owner, is there anything that makes you happier than seeing your fur baby healthy and happy? I know for me, seeing my pup in pain makes me hurt too. There’s never a time I wish desperately that my dog could talk more than when there’s something wrong with her so that she could tell me what it was.

Thankfully, I’ve found I can help my pup with a holistic natural tool: essential oils!

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are gaining popularity lately and for good reason. They have been proven to have mood-boosting effects as well as anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

It may come as no surprise to learn that as we discover more benefits of essential oils for people, we also are uncovering the benefits of using them to help our dogs and other animals.

Frankincense is one of the more popular essential oils for treating dogs. This powerful plant has several helpful qualities, and when used properly, frankincense oil benefits promote overall health and well-being for your pet.

What is Frankincense?

Frankincense comes from the resin of Boswellia trees. This tree typically grows in the dry, mountainous regions of India, Africa, and the Middle East.

This oil has a rich history, most notable of which might be its role in the Bible as one of three gifts for newborn Jesus in the manger. This essential oil has been used by many cultures for thousands of years!

Frankincense oil has a woody, spicy smell. You can use Frankincense topically, by diffusing it, or orally for its benefits.

What Benefits Does Frankincense Have?

People have studied Frankincense at length and have found that it has incredible benefits for people and animals.

Some of these benefits include:

  • Reduces inflammation and pain
  • Helps to reduce some tumors and kills cancer
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Eases gastrointestinal discomfort and reduces small intestine injury
  • Has a calming effect and works as an anti-depressant
  • Helps reduce the appearance of skin imperfections when applied topically
  • Anti-bacterial properties

How To Use Frankincense For Skin?

For people, dilute Frankincense at the ratio of 1 drop essential oil to 3 drops of the carrier oil of your choice to reduce skin sensitivity. Then apply one to two drops of the diluted oil to the desired area.

When you want these Frankincense oil benefits for your dog, you can apply topically. Before doing so, Frankincense oil should first be safely diluted. Using the oil directly or in high concentrations can potentially cause skin irritation.

Can Frankincense Oil Be Used On Dogs?

Yes, Frankincense oil is safe for dogs when used in moderation.

It’s a great all-around oil to use with your dogs. Frankincense is a less potent oil, making it safer to use in many aspects of pet care, including:

  • Wound care
  • Behavior improvement
  • Antibacterial healing
  • Ease anxiety

How To Safely Use Frankincense Oil On Dogs

Using Frankincense Oil Topically

For dogs, diluting Frankincense oil is important because the strength of essential oils is based on the human body. Clearly, most dogs are quite a bit smaller than an adult human, so you will need a smaller amount to get all those fantastic frankincense oil benefits.

Plus, dogs’ skin is much more sensitive than human skin, and essential oils should be used with plenty of caution to avoid irritation.

In order to make Frankincense oil safe for dogs, it’s important to dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil like sweet almond oil

I recommend using these dilution ratios:

  • Large to medium dogs…a ratio of 1 drop essential oil to 10 drops base oil
  • Small dogs…a ratio of 1 drop essential oil to 25 drops base oil.

When using Frankincense oil directly on your dog’s skin, put a little of the diluted oil directly on the desired area and massage into the skin.

Use this oil dilution along with our calming MuttScrub products for a routine that nourishes your dog’s skin, alleviates irritations, and promotes overall well-being.

Diffusing Frankincense Oil

Remember that dogs’ sense of smell is much stronger than a human sense of smell. Add only 1 or 2 drops of frankincense to your diffuser and be sure to give your dog a place to go if he reacts negatively to the smell.

Using Frankincense Oil Orally

It is safe for your pet to ingest frankincense orally.

Note: not all oils are created equally. Be careful to buy only “Therapeutic Grade” essential oils in order to be assured that you are using a great quality oil. Additionally, make sure to clear any oil treatments with your vet before beginning, just to be extra cautious.

Start with just 1-2 drops diluted and added to your pet’s water or food per day. Remember, a little bit goes a long way when it comes to essential oils.
