Lavender essential oil for dogs is the perfect tool to use on our furry friends oil because it is so safe and beneficial. Lavender oil benefits for dogs include calming anxiety, relieving itchy, irritated skin, deodorizing properties, and so much more.

Does your fur baby get anxious with thunderstorms? Have you noticed your dog is suffering from skin ailments such as bug bites, allergic reactions or irritations?

As a pet owner, I am always conscious of how my dog’s skin is looking and how my dog is behaving. When she seems to be anxious or uncomfortable, I work to help her feel better as quickly as I can.

Throughout the years I have tried several different things, but the one thing that has consistently worked has been utilizing the power of all-natural botanicals and plants. Therefore, I have begun using essential oils more and more in caring for myself and my dog.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are the liquid extracts from botanicals, plants, and herbs. There are different processes used to extract the oils, but what you are left with is the super-concentrated good stuff from the plant. They are potent and powerful—the scent and the benefits are both excellent.

More and more people are using essential oils, and for good reason. They have been proven to have antihistamine, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and many other helpful properties.

Lavender is likely the number one essential oil used on dogs (and perhaps people as well!). This beautiful plant has many beneficial qualities, and when used properly it can reduce anxiety, calm bug bites, and skin irritations, repel ticks and more.

What is Lavender Oil?

Lavender essential oil comes from the lavender plant, a common plant with pretty small purple flowers and a pleasant fragrance.

What Are Lavender Essential Oil Benefits?

Lavender essential oil has incredible benefits for animals (and people too!).

Some of Lavender oil’s benefits include:

  • a calming effect on dogs suffering from anxiety, stress, and motion sickness
  • helps to heal canine skin problems, allergies, and ear infections
  • soothe joint and abdominal pains.
  • a natural flea repellent
  • helps control impulses of irritability, panic attacks, fear, confusion and restlessness in dogs and allows their central nervous system to relax into a calm state.

As you can see, lavender essential oil offers so many important benefits for your pup.

Can Lavender Oil Be Used On Dogs?

Every pet owner who is interested in using essential oils on their dog has probably wondered “can lavender oil hurt my dog?”. The good news is, lavender oil is safe for dogs when used in moderation.

If you are diffusing Lavender oil in your home, your dogs should be quite safe. Use lavender oil in a diffuser or spray your dog’s coat with a lavender oil solution, so your pet can inhale in its restorative aroma.

Another excellent way to utilize lavender oil benefits is to use products containing natural lavender essential oil on your dog’s fur, such as MuttScrub products.

Can Lavender Oil Be Used On Puppies?

Do not apply essential oils on small puppies. It is best to wait until they are 18-24 weeks, but talk to your vet first.

Is Lavender Essential Oil Safe For Older Dogs?

Yes, older dogs can benefit from the healing powers of lavender oil, especially if they are suffering from age-related problems like arthritis, joint pains, and insomnia.

How To Safely Use Lavender Essential Oil on Dogs

Lavender essential oil can be safely used for dog skin ailments like hotspots, mange, rashes, redness, inflammation, and more.

Its antibacterial and analgesic properties work quickly on the affected skin. Be sure to use it watered down and used as a spray or diluted in a carrier oil like coconut oil or almond oil.

Use Lavender Oil to treat these issues:

  • Itchy skin
  • Ear infections
  • Itchy paws
  • Arthritis
  • Stomach Pain
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Remove Dog Odor

Using Lavender Oil Topically

Lavender oil is very beneficial for dogs to treat skin conditions, allergies, remove fleas and ticks, and even soothe anxiety and mental stress.

Always use therapeutic grade lavender oil and dilute it well before using it topically or as aromatherapy.

Diluting Lavender Oil For Safety

For dogs, diluting Lavender oil is important because the strength of essential oils is based on the human body, not a dog.

Additionally, dogs’ skin is much more sensitive than human skin. Use essential oils with caution to avoid irritation.

In order to use Lavender oil safely for dogs, it’s important to dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil like cold-pressed olive oil, fractionated coconut oil, or sweet almond oil

I recommend using these dilution ratios:

  • Large to medium dogs: a ratio of 3-6 drops of essential oil to 1 ounce of base oil
  • Small dogs: a ratio of 2-4 drops of essential oil to 1 ounce of base oil.

Always remember that when it comes to essential oils “less is more”. Use less of it if you’re in doubt.

Use this oil dilution along with our calming MuttScrub products for a routine that soothes your dog’s skin, alleviates irritations, and reduces anxiety.

Diffusing Lavender Oil

Some people ask “can dogs smell lavender oil?”

Yes, they definitely can! And dogs have smell likes and dislikes just as humans do.

As you probably know,  a dog’s sense of smell is much stronger than a human sense of smell. With this in mind, add only 1 or 2 drops of lavender to your diffuser at first. This allows you to introduce your pup to the smell and watch to see if she reacts negatively.

Always be sure to give your dog an unscented place to go if she reacts negatively to the smell.

Using Lavender Oil Orally

Do not give dogs lavender essential oil orally. Eating lavender oil can cause liver or kidney damage. While you can use lavender oil topically and aromatically, dogs should not consume the oil.

Safety Tips When Using Lavender Oil For Dogs

  • Only use “Therapeutic Grade” essential oils to ensure you’re using good quality essential oil. Make sure to read the labels carefully to check that you are using essential oils and not artificial fragrance.
  • Do not use lavender oil if your dog is pregnant or nursing
  • Always dilute the lavender essential oil in a carrier oil before use
  • Don’t use lavender oil if your dog is prone to epilepsy
  • Avoid contact with eyes, nose, and genitals
  • Do not add lavender oil to your dog’s food or water
